The San Francisco 49ers continue to make sweeping changes across the coaching staff as they prepare to do the same with the roster as free agency and the NFL Draft approach.

Special teams performance was not a strong point of the season in San Francisco last year and now-former coach Brian Schneider was relieved of his duties on Jan. 7.

The 49ers finished at No. 27 in the league with a 76.7 field goal percentage and were near the bottom of the league in other statistical categories as well.

Earlier this week, the team announced the hiring of Brant Boyer to lead their special teams unit next season.

Boyer has been with the New York Jets for the past nine seasons and worked under former and current 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for the past four.

Saleh left the 49ers to take over as head coach of the Jets and will return this year, taking back over the defensive unit after being fired by the Jets during the season.

Boyer also spent 10 years as a player before getting into coaching with the Browns as an intern in 2009. He's also worked for the Giants and Colts before moving on to the Jets.
