49ers Sign Brock Purdy a Pro Bowl Backup

The San Francisco 49ers' rebuild has seen ample players be pushed out the doors as Kyle Shanahan's team looks to a vastly different version of themselves in 2025.

But amid the flurry of exits, we now have a player walking through the door, and it's one that not many would have seen coming.

Sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter that former first-round pick and Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones is heading to the NFC West to be Brock Purdy's backup.

The deal is believed to be a two-year contract worth $7 million, with $5 million guaranteed.

Jones, after a hot start to life with the New England Patriots, slowly began to lose his grip on the starting job, and after an 18-24 record across three years, was shipped off to Jacksonville in 2024.

He then spent one season with the Jaguars, starting seven games (2-5) and throwing for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Jones now looks to reignite his career with the 49ers and will be under the guidance of "quarterback whisperer" Shanahan as the franchise has gone about gutting the roster this offseason.

The move for Jones doesn't move the needle for the 49ers, but the offense gets a solid enough backup for Purdy, and at just $7 million over two years and $5 million guaranteed, that's a cheap contract.

Jones has gone from a starting quarterback just a few seasons ago, to looking like a career backup, and if anyone in the NFL is going to get him playing some solid football, it's Shanahan.
