San Francisco 49ers center Jake Brendel doesn't get to golf as much as he'd like—especially during the season, when football takes priority. But one offseason round at The Olympic Club turned into an unforgettable moment when quarterback Brock Purdy received life-changing news: the 49ers and his agent had finalized a five-year, $265 million contract extension, making him one of the NFL's highest-paid players.

Brendel vividly recalled that day in May, when he and Purdy were on the 17th hole enjoying a round with their wives. That's when Purdy's phone rang.

"It was pretty cool. He was supposed to tee off, and then, he got the phone call, so it was kind of annoying," Brendel joked with reporters on Tuesday. "No, it was actually really cool. He had a FaceTime from all the guys. I think it was Coach [Kyle] Shanahan and [GM] John Lynch, a couple of other guys.

"They were all together and just super happy for him. Likewise, I was just there to support him, and it's just cool. It's cool to see young guys receive the recognition and the compensation that they deserve."

Brendel admitted he isn't much of a golfer but never passes up an invitation from his quarterback.

How did the big news impact the remainder of Purdy's game?

"I think he finished off really well," Brendel said. "Like I said, I think he's got a lot of stuff ahead of him, and I'm just happy that he's here for the next couple of years."

The life-changing offseason moments didn't stop with the contract. Purdy and his wife, Jenna, recently became first-time parents, welcoming a baby girl over the weekend.

"It's still early days," Brendel noted. "I feel like he's handled it well. There's a lot of stress and—not anxiety—but just there's a whole other kind of section of life, when you become a parent, that you have to deal with. But I think him and his wife are both great people, and I wouldn't want anyone else to have a kid like that."

Purdy's big payday and growing family highlight a memorable offseason for the 49ers quarterback as he prepares for the 2025 campaign.
