49ers' Trey Lance reportedly has 'best practice of the offseason'

Time will tell if 2021 rookie Trey Lance is the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback of the near future, as in for Week 1 of the upcoming season. What's known ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend is that Lance is the club's signal-caller for right now with veteran Jimmy Garoppolo unable to throw while recovering from the shoulder surgery he underwent in March.

49ers All-Pro tight end George Kittle recently said Lance had "taken ownership" of the offense as it pertains to meetings and other off-field subjects, but that comment did little to silence supposed worries some may have about the 22-year-old's "arm fitness." On Friday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus provided a promising update regarding Lance's performances in practice sessions.

"Lance has impressed people within the organization so far this spring, and the team feels he’s already shown progress early in organized team activities," Kyed explained. "Thursday was believed to be his best practice of the offseason."

Such a report didn't emerge from thin air. It did, however, come after head coach Kyle Shanahan stated he still "expects" Garoppolo will be traded at some point this summer, and after new San Francisco quarterbacks coach Brian Griese said he hadn't yet spoken with the 30-year-old as of Wednesday.

The notion that Jimmy G is out of sight and out of mind likely says plenty about his future with his current employer.
