5 Cowboys players on the roster bubble who likely secured a job in preseason finale vs Falcons, and who could be cut as a result
Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

The Dallas Cowboys' preseason finale and it is 53-man roster prediction season. Though I already did mine, I did want to individually point out five players I considered to be on the "roster bubble."

These are players that after the Cowboys' win over the Atlanta Falcons, are looking like roster locks in my eyes thanks to how well they played (or in the last two cases, based on the fact that they didn't play).

Let's dive in.

DE James Houston

It took Houston one drive to get to the Falcons quarterback for a sack, continuing his dominance in the pass rush department this preseason. The guy is too good when rushing the passer. He also recorded two tackles for loss and multiple times, he generated pressure even when not hitting the QB.

He's one of the best pass rushers on the team and deserves a roster spot because he can be a weapon on obvious passing downs. It won't be easy to keep him as the Cowboys are deep at edge rusher though and it will take going long at the position.

Potential cuts to make room for Houston: In my projection, I'm going long with six defensive ends while going short at defensive tackle (four), where I'd expect the Cowboys to use practice squad elevations if they sign outside help before the start of the regular season.

DT Perrion Winfrey

Similarly to Houston, Winfrey showed up all of August. On Friday's game, he recorded one pass deflection, two sacks, and one quarterback hit. For good measure, he added a tackle for loss. He's shown he can play nose tackle and three-technique and DC Matt Eberflus is likely to be a fan of his versatility. The former UFL player deserves a spot on the 53-man roster.

Potential cuts to make room for Winfrey: He should beat seventh-round rookie Tommy Akingbesote and I don't have Mazi Smith making the 53, either. Though Winfrey is not a true nose tackle like Smith, he's the better player and the Cowboys either will play Solomon Thomas at nose or they'll bring someone from the outside after roster cuts.

WR Ryan Flournoy

Flournoy is in the mix for one of the final spots on the wide receiver room and based on his play Friday, I believe he earned it. He thrived as a run blocker once again, which is the biggest differentiator he holds over other young wideouts. And he produced as a pass catcher with four receptions for 45 yards.

Potential cuts to make room for Flournoy: It comes down to Jalen Brooks, Jalen Cropper, and undrafted rookie Traeshon Holden.

Those who didn't play

The three players above secured their job with their play on the gridiron but we also learned plenty about those who were healthy scratches. The decision to not play these couple of roster bubble players strongly suggests they're on the 53-man roster:

  • LB Damone Clark: The former three-year starter went through a rough 2024 season under Mike Zimmer and he appeared to be in danger of losing his spot on the roster following a bad outing in Week 1. But he bounced back strongly in Week 2 and was a training camp standout. Clark sitting likely means he's in.
  • RT Hakeem Adeniji: The veteran has worked exclusively at right tackle and it seems like he'll be the man behind Terence Steele for the 2025 NFL season over sixth-round rookie Ajani Cornelius, who played most of Friday's game in the same spot.
