A Look at the Engine of the Miami Dolphins

The identity of the 2026-27 Miami Dolphins offense begins with one player: Pro Bowl running back De’Von Achane.

Following a breakout 2025 campaign that earned him his first Pro Bowl selection, Achane has firmly established himself as one of the NFL’s most explosive offensive weapons. He finished among the league leaders with 1,350 rushing yards while averaging an incredible 5.7 yards per carry, proving he can be much more than just a speed back. He is also a very capable receiver out of the backfield, which has made him one of football’s most complete offensive playmakers.

Every time Achane touches the football, defenses are forced to account for his world-class speed. Whether it’s stretching a defense to the edge, turning a screen pass into a 40-yard gain, or breaking through the middle for a game-changing touchdown, he remains the centerpiece of Miami’s offensive attack. What makes this year’s Dolphins backfield intriguing isn’t just Achane; it’s the depth developing behind him.

Second-year running back Ollie Gordon II has emerged as the perfect complement to Achane’s explosive style. While Achane thrives in space, Gordon provides a physical downhill presence capable of wearing down defenses between the tackles and converting difficult short-yardage situations.

Jaylen Wright also remains an important piece of the rotation. Possessing outstanding acceleration himself, Wright gives Miami another home-run threat whenever he enters the game. His speed allows head coach Jeff Hafley to keep fresh legs on the field without sacrificing explosiveness.

What separates Miami’s running back room from many around the league is versatility. Achane is among the NFL’s most dangerous receiving backs. Gordon provides power. Wright offers elite speed and change-of-pace ability. Together, the group gives Miami multiple ways to attack opposing defenses depending on the game plan.

That versatility could prove especially valuable as the Dolphins continue building around a younger offense. With defenses likely focusing on slowing Achane, having multiple capable backs ready to contribute should keep the running game productive throughout the season.

De’Von Achane has evolved from an exciting draft pick into one of the NFL’s premier playmakers and one of the franchise’s cornerstone players. If this group stays healthy, expect the Dolphins’ ground game to be the engine that drives the offense throughout the 2026-27 season.
