A Tough Blow for the Buccaneers’ Offensive Line

Tristan Wirfs injured. That’s the news that shook the Tampa Bay Buccaneers community on Wednesday. The All-Pro left tackle and cornerstone of the offense underwent knee surgery and, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, will begin the 2025 season on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list, meaning he will miss at least the first four weeks.

The information was first reported by Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, who detailed that a scheduled arthroscopy revealed more damage than expected to the player’s right knee, which already gave him problems in 2024 (although he only missed one game). During spring training, Wirfs did not participate and was seen with a cumbersome leg brace.

Todd Bowles had stated weeks ago that he would be “ready for training camp,” downplaying the player’s physical condition. But tests revealed otherwise, and now the franchise will have to face the start of the season without Baker Mayfield’s elite protector.

In 2024, Wirfs didn’t allow a single sack and only 13 pressures in over 600 snaps, the fewest in the entire NFL according to Pro Football Focus. His impact was instrumental in Mayfield’s best season as a pro. His absence is undoubtedly a significant loss.

Who will fill the gap?

With Justin Skule gone (he signed with the Vikings), the responsibility now falls on newcomer Charlie Heck. The former Texans, Cardinals, and 49ers player has been tabbed as a possible backup, but his level is far from Wirfs’s. Replacing a two-time All-Pro is no easy task.

The schedule is relentless: Tampa Bay will open the season in Atlanta, then visit Houston, and then host the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. Teams with potent pass rushers who will test whoever occupies Mayfield’s blindside from the very first minute.

Not all is lost

Despite the emotional blow, the team remains calm. Tristan Wirfs will return, and if the rest of the offensive players stay healthy, the Bucs will remain a contender in the NFC. This will be an early test of character for a team hoping to return to the playoffs and go even further.

He’s not the only offensive starter recovering: Chris Godwin will also be in the spotlight as fans prepare for his return. The start is tough, but Tampa Bay knows the goal is to come out strong for the decisive stretch of the year.
