The future at quarterback for the New York Giants is Jaxson Dart. That’s not a secret, of course, after the franchise spent a first round pick on the former Ole Miss star. Now, it’s just a question of when that future is coming.
In Week 1, the Giants sent out veteran and former Pro Bowl talent Russell Wilson. The results were less than ideal, though, and now fans in New York are calling for a quarterback change. That’s despite the plan in New York being to let Dart sit for the time being and learn the position from a veteran who has found success in the NFL.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on Get Up on Thursday morning. There, he explained what the current plan is within the Giants organization regarding Dart. However, that remains a fluid situation.
“The Giants continue to insist that they have a plan,” Schefter said. “Both the head coach Brian Daboll and the general manager Joe Schoen were in Buffalo when they had Nathan Peterman start out. They drafted Josh Allen. The plan was to wait as long as they could before they turned to Josh Allen. And they waited all of one half of Week 1.”
The Giants currently have Wilson and Jameis Winston within the organization as veteran quarterbacks. Wilson, now 36 years old, has been to the Pro Bowl 10 times, including in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, since leaving Seattle after 2021, he’s largely seen a career downturn. In the opening game against Washington this season, he completed just 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards while the offense scored just six points.
“After this first loss, Brian Daboll did not initially commit to Russell Wilson,” Schefter said. “So, now we have a situation where for every game you may lose, for every time Russell Wilson throws an incomplete pass, these questions are gonna come up.”
New York used the 25th overall pick on Jaxson Dart. That came after he was an All-SEC performer at quarterback in 2024. The question now is just a matter of how long will it be until the Giants turn to him long-term.
“The fans want Jaxson Dart. They’re gonna get him at some point. We don’t know if it’s going to be at halftime of this game or after Week 2,” Schefter said. “But at some point, when there’s another loss or two, and Russell is struggling, Jaxson Dart is coming.”
One thing that the Giants have lacked recently is consistency at the quarterback position. Since another former Ole Miss quarterback, Eli Manning, retired in 2019, the Giants have started nine different quarterbacks. Jaxson Dart will eventually make 10, with the hope being that he brings some stability to the position.
