Shedeur Sanders’ NFL journey began with mid-level expectations, but he has given the Cleveland Browns something to consider as they finalize their roster.
The fifth-rounder from Colorado entered camp battling uphill against veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. However, the Browns made their intentions clear by naming Flacco the starter with backups to be decided.
Sanders has shown flashes of his playmaking ability in the preseason. His debut against the Carolina Panthers was out standing, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The 'Grown' QBs command of the huddle and ability to extend plays under pressure was noticeable. By comparison, Gabriel’s outing against the Philadelphia Eagles was decent, but two turnovers were a problem.
The challenge for Sanders has always been about more than a single game. Cleveland’s quarterback room is crowded and could stay that way going into the season. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported eariler this week, the Browns will likely carry a four-QB rotation. If true, Sanders may secure a roster spot without forcing the team to cut ties with either Pickett or Gabriel.

Another factor working in Sanders’ favor is his marketability. Since being selected 144th overall, he has led all NFL rookies in jersey sales and drew the highest preseason television audience in over a decade. While popularity doesn’t win roster battles, it shows his value to the organization beyond the field. One factor the Browns QB room has struggled with in the past 25 years.
Sanders has done enough to warrant consideration. He isn’t pushing for Flacco or Pickett yet, but time to develop in the league will be key. The Browns seem inclined to keep him with his next step being to grow as an NFL passer.
