When the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to pick Travis Hunter second at the 2025 NFL Draft, they added a potential superstar able to play two positions. In college, he lined up on both sides of the ball, participating as a wide receiver and cornerback.
That gives him the potential to do the same with the Jaguars. After the team's minicamp occurred earlier this month, it remained unclear if they planned to have Hunter on more offensive or defensive plays.
In his stellar final season with the Colorado Buffaloes, Hunter participated in 13 games. As a receiver, he racked up 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on 96 receptions. As a corner, he achieved 36 combined tackles, four interceptions, and a forced fumble.
That impressive collegiate performance resulted in him winning the Heisman Trophy. Now he’ll look to excel in the NFL, potentially adding many more awards.
However, rookies need time to adjust to the professional league and learn their positions within the team's system. For Hunter, a lot hinges on how much the Jaguars have him participate as a receiver or corner.
During a call with Unsportsmanlike, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter shared his thoughts on how the Jaguars will “deploy” Hunter in the upcoming season. He brought up the notion that Hunter could be a star like MLB's Shohei Ohtani, who bats and pitches for the team.
Schefter said several months ago, when Hunter was drafted, the Jaguars indicated they planned to “onboard him and develop him as a wide receiver.” He said he believes that plan continues and they will “sprinkle him in at defensive back.”
Based on Schefter’s remarks, he thinks the Jaguars plan to play the rookie “an awful lot” in the upcoming season.
“I think they picked him as a two-way threat, but I think they picked him to start him at wide receiver and then use him at DB. I think that’s the initial plan,” he said on Unsportsmanlike.
Schefter mentioned it's always possible the plan could change as Hunter participates in the Jaguars training camp. However, he said the rookie will need to learn playing wide receiver in the NFL and it's "not a simple thing."
During a SiriusXM NFL interview earlier this month, Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone said Hunter "does not tire," but also that time would dictate which position he lines up for the most. While stamina is great, longevity could be a question mark when it comes to playing at two positions.
With the two-way star, the Jaguars are looking to see how quickly the rookie will pick up playing receiver during practices with the team. Jacksonville is set to begin their training camp at the end of July, which will better allow them to analyze his abilities and progress.
