Adding Russell Wilson gives Denver Broncos early power rankings boost

The Broncos have languished in the various NFL power rankings by media in recent years, but the acquisition of Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson has changed how the team is viewed. In power rankings by The Sporting News’ by Vinnie Iyer, the Broncos are No. 10. ESPN, meanwhile, also has Denver at No.12.

“The Broncos have a real passing game again with Russell Wilson throwing to a healthy Courtland Sutton and others,” Iyer wrote. “How good the defense supports that side will depend on how much Bradley Chubb can set the tone and get required help on every level.”

In the ESPN ranking, the Broncos are ahead of the Raiders (21) but trail the Chargers (4) and  Chiefs (2).

There’s a sense of optimism for the franchise after consecutive last-place finishes in the AFC West.

The Broncos won a Super Bowl in the 2015 season, the last time they paired a young pass-rusher (Von Miller) with a star veteran quarterback (Peyton Manning). However, this year's path may be more difficult. .

“There's a very good chance this is the best division ... ever,” NBC Sports’ Peter King told Broncos reporter Phil Milani.

The Broncos have a solid ground game with running backs Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon III. However, how Wilson clicks with his young wide receivers will determine if Denver can vault its division rivals.

Denver's defense was great last season, finishing as the league's third best. If Bradley Chubb and Randy Gregory can stay healthy, they will form a strong pass-rush tandem that could slow quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), Justin Herbert (Chargers) and Derek Carr (Raiders).
