While the Indianapolis Colts won six of their first seven games of the season, wide receiver Adonai "AD" Mitchell largely became a forgotten member of the Indianapolis offense after he turned a sure touchdown into a touchback when he lost control of the football right before he crossed the goal line during the club's 27-20 Week 4 loss at the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 28.
For a piece published on Friday, Mitchell spoke with James Boyd of The Athletic about a playing future that's seemingly up in the air ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline.
"You kinda get lost when you don’t get that opportunity, so I’ve just been trying to cherish every moment and just make the most of every moment I get because I don’t know when I’m gonna get that s--- again," Mitchell explained. "I hope I haven’t played my last offensive snap."
The Pro Football Reference website shows that Mitchell only played six snaps in Indianapolis' 40-6 Week 5 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He was inactive when the Colts earned a 31-27 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6, and he then logged just five snaps in the 38-24 win at the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 19.
A 2024 second-round draft pick, Mitchell is on an inexpensive rookie contract through the 2027 campaign.
"This is all I ever done, dog," Mitchell said. "This is pretty much the only thing I’ve ever really found joy in besides just being around my family. I hated school, so I knew I wasn’t gonna work a regular job. But now that this is my job, I just can’t take it for granted. I gotta make this work."
As Akeem Glaspie noted for the Indianapolis Star, Mitchell addressed members of the locker room during a team meeting held the day after the Rams game.
"We were going to meet about it anyway, and that’s pretty much the only way to get through it," Mitchell told Boyd. "First, you have to acknowledge what you did wrong and take accountability. I know people want to ask me like, 'Do I still look back at that? Do I still think it’s my fault?' Hell yeah, I do. There ain’t a moment when I don’t think about it."
Mitchell may have plenty of time to think about that moment when the Colts host the Tennessee Titans (1-6) this Sunday. As of Friday afternoon, ESPN BET had Indianapolis as a 14.5-point favorite for what could become a blowout.
"This is the most adversity I’ve ever faced, pretty much at the top of where I always wanted to get to (in football) …I’d be a liar if I said it doesn’t get to me. I’m human," Mitchell added.
