Adrian Peterson Makes Feelings Clear on Vikings QB Battle

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has weighed in on the team’s quarterback competition this summer.

Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy continue to compete for the starting job as the preseason nears and the Vikings prepare to decide on a signal-caller.

Peterson, one of the franchise’s most accomplished players, discussed the battle in an interview with RotoGrinders’ Kyle Odegard. From Peterson’s perspective, McCarthy remains too inexperienced to reclaim the starting role at this stage.

“In my eyes, based on what I’ve seen from J.J., it would definitely be a surprise,” Peterson said. “That’s not to take anything away from J.J. I feel like he’s still a young quarterback. He’s only been around two or three years and he was injured the first year. But I feel like he has a lot of growing to do.”

McCarthy has made 10 starts over two seasons with the Vikings, finishing with a 6-4 record while completing 57 percent of his passes and recording an 11-to-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Although the third-year player may have shown progress this offseason, Peterson sees the gap as substantial when measured against a proven veteran. Peterson voiced clear enthusiasm for the arrival of Murray, whom the Vikings signed this offseason to a one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum.

“When I saw it going across the ticker that they were getting Kyler, I thought, ‘That’s a hell of a move right there.’ Kyler being down there in Arizona, you could see the writing was on the wall,” Peterson said.

“Whatever the reason was, I don’t know, but he’s a tremendous talent. Great agility as a quarterback and has an incredible arm. And a guy that can keep a play alive. I thought it would be a really good fit for Minnesota with the talent they have. He really could be a game-changer for them.”

Murray, a former No. 1 overall draft selection, brings mobility, arm strength and playmaking ability that Peterson believes could elevate an already talented Minnesota roster.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell has declined to set a firm date for naming a starter, leaving both quarterbacks to continue competing for practice reps.

Murray has been regarded as the favorite throughout the process, though his grasp of O’Connell’s complex offensive scheme will play a key role in the final decision.

Peterson’s comments underscore the potential impact Murray could have if he secures the job and builds chemistry with the skill players around him.

As training camp winds down, the Vikings face growing pressure to identify their starter so the offense can focus its preparations for the regular season.
