AFC East schedule breakdown: The toughest four-game stretches in 2026

Not all stretches during an NFL season are created equal. A favorable month can launch a playoff push. A brutal one can bury a team before Thanksgiving leftovers hit the fridge.

Below, we examine the most difficult four-game stretches for each AFC East team — the gauntlets that could define division races, shape playoff hopes, and, in some cases, determine whether coaches and QBs enter the offseason under pressure.

Buffalo Bills

Weeks 2-5: vs. Detroit Lions (Sept. 17) • vs. Los Angeles Chargers (Sept 27) • vs. New England Patriots (Oct. 4) • at Los Angeles Rams (Oct. 12) | Buffalo opens the season pretty much with zero breaks and competing against playoff and Super Bowl contenders. Back-to-back-back home games against NFC North contenders (Lions on Thursday Night Football) and the rising Chargers from the AFC West. Then comes a divisional clash with the Patriots, followed by a primetime road trip to SoFi Stadium against the Rams.

This early gauntlet will test their depth immediately, with a short-week recovery and top-tier quarterback competition against Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, Drake Maye and Hall of Fame quarterback Matthew Stafford. This is a major reason the Bills have the eighth-toughest schedule in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins

Weeks 15-18: at Green Bay Packers (Dec. 20) • vs. Los Angeles Chargers (Dec. 27) • vs. Buffalo Bills (Jan. 3) • at New England Patriots (TBD) | Miami’s late-season slate is punishing, with four games against 2025 playoff teams to end the season, not to mention the Broncos and Bears two weeks before this gauntlet. With the second-hardest overall schedule in the league and one of the youngest rosters coming into 2026, this run will define who their franchise guys and leaders are and potentially aid a high 2027 draft pick if things go south.

New head coach Jeff Hafley, quarterback Malik Willis and company will have their hands full in 2026.

New England Patriots

Weeks 1-4: at Seattle Seahawks (Sept. 9) • vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (Sept. 20) • at Jacksonville Jaguars (Sept. 27) • at Buffalo Bills (Oct. 4) | The Patriots hold two tough stretches, the one mentioned above and weeks 9-13 (Packers, Lions, Chargers, Bills), which has an argument. That said, as defending AFC champs and Super Bowl LX participants, the Patriots open with a brutal rematch against the Seahawks (Wednesday night opener), followed by three more strong opponents and playoff contenders.

New England’s sixth-toughest SOS overall means no easy path to repeating, but it will give the drama-filled offseason and young core a challenge to overcome this fall.

New York Jets

Weeks 2-5: vs. Green Bay Packers (Sept. 20) at Detroit Lions (Sept. 27) at Chicago Bears (Oct. 4) vs. Cleveland Browns (Oct. 11) The Jets’ early slate includes consecutive NFC North tests that could make or break momentum early for a dismantled roster with no confidence of a successful season around the fanbase. The early cluster against playoff-caliber teams and top-tier defenses stands out for an organization with the 12th-hardest schedule.

This stretch alone could have major implications on how the Jets move forward with their coaching staff, personnel staff and roster in the 2027 offseason.
