Chiefs HC Andy Reid stands behind veteran DT Chris Jones, noting that Jones is giving his all despite being double-teamed and drawing attention from opposing offensive linemen.
“When you rush four, you want to get somebody home, obviously. That’s what Joe strives for, and the guys strive for, and we’ve been doing a good job with getting pressure on,” Reid said, via NBC Sports. “You’ve just got to get to the quarterback. We had a lot of blocked balls, which was great, you’ve got to be relatively close to get those. Especially if they’re intermediate throws, the trajectory of the ball is one that you’ve got to be relatively close [to] get a hand up to be able to block.”
“But going back to Chris, I mean, Chris is giving his all. He’s doing everything he can do. He gets doubled from various angles. He’s going to draw a lot of attention, and so that’s an advantage to the other guys to have a chance to get themselves home,” Reid continued. “So, as much emphasis is put on Chris, let’s take advantage of that and get ourselves on the quarterback. So, not just to the quarterback, but on the quarterback.”
Raiders owner Mark Davis responded to questions about if he feels pressure to start QB Fernando Mendoza and move on from veteran QB Kirk Cousins during Mendoza’s rookie season.
“From me, there’s absolutely no pressure whatsoever,” Davis said, via NBC Sports. “Today, there’s a lot of pressure put on teams when they draft a guy No. 1 that you have to play him right away. That’s why I think we were so fortunate to get Kirk Cousins as someone who could bridge the gap and let this young man learn a lot about what football is in the pros, the speed of the game, and the things that have to be done. … And he’s picking it up great, but I think we’re fortunate he doesn’t have to go out and play.”
“I’ve seen quarterbacks get fast-tracked onto the field and they may do well, but they don’t learn all the intricacies of footwork and everything else it takes,” Davis continued. “So they’re limited in their development, maybe throughout their career. I’m really happy with the way it is with Fernando right now, and we’ll see what happens. I tell people jokingly that if he can play football, he’s going to be amazing. Because he’s got every other intangible you could want in a person. He’s a hard worker. He’s a sponge. [And] he’s working with Mr. [Tom] Brady on a lot of things.”
