NFL players and 4th of July don’t have the cleanest of history.
Former New York Giants pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul famously lost part of his hand in a fireworks incident years ago.
And while thankfully, Najee Harris’ injury wasn’t nearly as bad, his agent confirmed there was an incident on July 4th…
“Najee Harris was present at a 4th of July event where a fireworks mishap resulted in injuries to several attendees. Najee sustained a superficial eye injury during the incident, but is fully expected to be ready for the upcoming NFL season,” said Harris’ agent Doug Hendrickson.
The good news is, all of the rumors circulating the inner webs about Najee Harris and his eye can be put to bed.
There were talks that he had lost his eye entirely or was blind in one eye. Obviously, it doesn’t seem to be nearly as serious.
Harris left the Steelers in free agency this offseason for the Los Angeles Chargers. They used a first round pick on running back Omarion Hampton however, and this certainly won’t help his mission of holding him off as starter.
The incident occurred in Harris’ home town of Antioch, California. And while Harris was injured, a man lost multiple fingers and half a dozen others were injured during the explosion.
In all, it’s just good that the former Steelers running back is ok and ready to go for the season.
It’s just another reminder of the dangers of these activities for NFL players whose bodies are quite literally their income source.
Between Jason Pierre-Paul and now Najee Harris, hopefully this is the last that we will hear of any such incident for a while.
Harris will attempt to rush for his fifth consecutive 1,000 yard season in 2025.
