Sean Stellato, the agent for New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito who went viral this past Monday night, shared that he sent somewhat of a warning to the New York Jets after the Jets failed to make the undrafted rookie a suitable offer this past offseason.
"With all transparency, I said, 'He’s gonna throw for 300 yards against you in the last preseason game,'" Stellato said during a conversation with Steve Serby of the New York Post regarding what he told the Jets after they didn't sign DeVito. "...They got kinda mad at me, and I felt bad after 'cause I said it out of frustration, because I have the utmost respect for (Jets general manager) Joe Douglas, and (assistant GM) Rex Hogan has been a dear friend through the years."
Stellato explained that the Giants, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders were the "only" teams that nearly drafted DeVito this past spring. Stellato added that the Jets offered DeVito a tryout rather than a spot on the practice squad as an undrafted free agent before he landed with the Giants.
A native of Cedar Grove, N.J., DeVito has become a local sensation who has guided the Giants to three straight victories and has analysts believing he has a legitimate future in the NFL as at least a backup. As for Douglas and the Jets, they may be wishing they would've had DeVito over backup Zach Wilson after they lost Week 1 starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles four snaps into Rodgers' Gang Green tenure.
Across his first six games (four starts) with the Giants, DeVito completed 83-of-126 passes (65.9%) for 855 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. The 25-year-old has also contributed 154 rushing yards and a score on 31 carries.
To compare, Wilson has tossed eight touchdown passes and seven picks over 11 games and 10 starts this season. Meanwhile, ESPN stats show the 5-8 Jets ended Week 14 ranked last in the NFL with an average of 266.8 offensive yards per game and tied for 28th with 15.5 points per contest.
Wilson spent back-to-back games as a benched spectator before he guided the Jets to a 30-6 win over the Houston Texans this past Sunday.
Stellato previously revealed that DeVito turned proposals from the Commanders and, later, the New England Patriots down to stay with the Giants via their practice squad through the start of the regular season. Only time will tell if the Jets will ultimately regret not making DeVito an offer he couldn't refuse after he was waived by the Giants in late August.
