Ahmed Hassanein: The Detroit Lions' Next Success Story

As the 2026 NFL Season draws closer, the Detroit Lions are getting closer and closer to finalizing their roster. As many players get cut, some stand out, and by far, this year’s training camp standout is Edge Rusher Ahmed Hassanein.

The 6’2”, 275 lb. Hassanein has been a nuisance on the defensive line. Pressuring the Quarterback, collapsing pockets, using his strength to pressure the offensive line… The Boise State product is turning the heads of coaches and fans as he looks to earn a role. While still raw, the now 2nd-year player is showing why Detroit drafted him.

Hassanein is Built Different

Hassanein didn’t come to the NFL the traditional way and is still relatively new to football. A former CrossFit athlete, he was born in the United States but grew up in Cairo, Egypt, before moving back to the United States to play football in California. He was a high school standout who committed to playing for Boise State University.

In college, his elite athleticism paired well with his growing talents. He was a standout Defensive End/Edge Rusher, recording 24 career sacks, including 12.5 in his junior year. Following his senior season, he declared for the NFL Draft and went viral for his intensity during combine drills. The Detroit Lions selected Hassanein in the 6th round of the 2025 NFL Draft. 

He’s a Dan Campbell Guy

The Lions and Hassanein's relationship was one that seemed destined from the start. During his first training camp, Hassanein personified the term “grit”, a word that defines the Dan Campbell-led Detroit Lions. His ability to tough out any hits and harm and play for the team is what compelled the Lions to draft him, and something that has shown early in his career.

Hassanein would suffer a pectoral injury in the preseason, but the Lions would release him on an injury provision, which would allow the Lions to keep him, something that General Manager Brad Holmes echoed. After recovering, Hassanein would be back in Detroit on the practice squad, where he hopes to be called up.

Lions Putting it All Together

Fast forward to July 2026, and the Detroit Lions training camp once again features Hassanein in a battle for a roster spot as an edge rusher. Once again, Hassanein is an absolute force of nature. He’s gotten bigger, stronger, and even with limited time on the field last season, he’s making smarter plays and playing with the same ferocity. Regardless of the depth at his position, with the recently drafted Derrick Moore and DJ Wonnum ahead of him (Aiden Hutchinson was omitted for obvious reasons), he’s showcasing the aggression that coaches want in their defensive line.

Hassanein is learning how to play the game at a high level, and in a league that values pass rushers, he’s starting to get the proper reps. Great pass rushes in the NFL feature numerous players who can get to the Quarterback, and whether starting or coming off the bench, he’s showing he deserves those reps. Coaches and media alike are taking notice, and the 2nd-year player is showing why the Lions drafted him.

Is Ahmed Hassanein the next star Edge in the NFL? Only time will tell, but he’s showing what the Detroit Lions are made of: Grit. He personifies the hard work and intensity needed to succeed in the NFL, and that intensity has put the team on notice. If success is measured by effort, Hassanein’s career is only just beginning.
