Pros:

  • Excellent Size, Speed, Length Combination
LT Overton's athleticism always pops when watching Alabama, thanks to his ability to move quickly, long-arm opposing offensive tackles, and utilize his size and strength to collapse the pocket on quarterbacks. There's a reason he was big enough and fast enough to reclassify recruiting classes and get to college a year early. He's been a truly gifted NFL-level athlete for years now.
  • Near Elite Pass Rush Rate Stats
He's posted a pass rush pressure rate over 15% on the season with win rates near 20% (according to multiple charting services). Despite a strangely low sack total Overton is actually one of the better pass rushers in the nation on top of being a strong run defender overall.
  • Scheme Fit Versatility
Thanks to his wild mix of height, length, and 280+ pounds with speed and flexibility to win from multiple positions, Overton can likely fit almost any NFL scheme. He's logged the most work as a true edge rusher, but he's strong enough and thick enough to shift inside with regularity at the next level in odd or even defensive fronts.

Cons

  • Edge Setting and Tackle Discipline
A good portion of Overton's college tape is littered with technical errors on the edge that get him out of position to make strong tackle efforts. Part of that stems from his being so much younger than the competition he was facing for virtually his entire career (he just turned 20 in October). He was still developing. But part of it just looks like technique or over-pursuit tendencies that can be corrected with good coaching.
  • Inconsistencies in Pass Rush Motor
While Overton does have some excellent pass rush rate stats, he can also disappear at times when teams key in on stopping him specifically. When that happens, Overton sometimes looks like he's going through the motions, trying to pull multiple offensive lineman his way, but not looking to finish.
  • Finishing Havoc Opportunities
Overton can throw an offensive tackle with one arm, but then somehow fail to make a sack or block a pass at the line. Instead of looking to force quarterbacks or running backs to make tough decisions, Overton needs to improve on simply wrapping offensive playmakers up without hesitation. He has every trait necessary to become a sack monster at the next level. Just execute and finish.

Player Evaluation:

LT Overton was a hard player to properly evaluate early on when he was still at Texas A&M as he was still clearly developing, but his Alabama 2024 season has been impressive. He's getting after the passer at a much higher rate. He's showing even greater strength than before. However, he still just needs to learn how to fully capitalize on his special traits.

If Overton can continue to improve on a few technical things in the run game and finish plays that follow absurdly athletic moves only a few players can make he's going to be a special NFL player. He might benefit from returning to school for one more year, because he might have early first round potential and the numbers to back it up next year. Either way, he's one of the best edge defenders in the class already.

Player Comparison:

Cameron Heyward
Just like Cameron Heyward, Overton is a jumbo edge defender coming out of school with a speed and strength combination that's hard to handle. He has the frame to eventually shift further inside along the defensive front more often too, just like Heyward did following his rookie contract.
