Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce has taken a step forward in his recovery, but he does not appear close to returning from injured reserve.
The Athletic’s James Boyd reported Thursday that Pierce was no longer wearing a cast on his left ankle and heel. The change offers a visible sign of progress, but it does not mean the fifth-year receiver is ready to play.
Boyd cautioned against expecting an immediate return, writing that he “didn’t get the sense that he’s close to a return.” Pierce is eligible to come off injured reserve in Week 7, when Indianapolis visits the Minnesota Vikings, but eligibility does not confirm he will be activated.
Briefly saw #Colts WR Alec Pierce in the locker room today. No longer wearing a cast on his left ankle/heel, so that’s a sign of progress.

I’ll add, however, that I didn’t get the sense that he’s close to a return.
Earliest he could come back from IR is in Week 7 at Minnesota.
Pierce aggravated his left heel during the Colts’ Week 2 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He had undergone offseason surgery on the same foot, and Indianapolis placed him on injured reserve while he continued rehabilitation.
His absence has removed one of quarterback Daniel Jones’s most valuable downfield passing options. Pierce led the NFL in yards per reception in each of the previous two seasons, giving Indianapolis a serious threat who can stretch coverage and create space underneath for other receivers.
The Colts must continue without that element. They host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and Pierce’s recovery update does not change his status for the AFC South matchup.
Indianapolis will need its pass-catchers to provide the explosive plays Pierce typically brings. The team added veteran receiver Darius Slayton after Pierce’s injury, while other targets must help Richardson sustain the passing attack.
The next milestone will be whether Pierce can progress to football activities and eventually practice. Until the Colts provide a clearer update, the end of the cast should be viewed as encouraging but limited progress, not a sign that his return is imminent.
