Alex Smith's wife 'nauseous' watching QB return to football field

Alex Smith made his return to the field for the Washington Football Team on Sunday after suffering a devastating leg injury in 2018. While everyone was celebrating the veteran quarterback, his wife revealed it was a nerve-wracking experience to watch him throw the pigskin again.

Elizabeth Smith reflected on her husband's performance with grace, but said it was a scary moment for her as the quarterback entered the game for an injured Kyle Allen.

“Well obviously fear, instantly. Nauseous. Not knowing what to expect,” she said, according to Washington, D.C.’s ABC affiliate. “He’s worked so hard to get to this point, even to just put a uniform on. Overwhelming amount of pride for him. So proud. He has surpassed anything anyone ever thought he’d be able to do and here we are.”

Smith completed 9-of-17 pass attempts on Sunday nearly two years after he broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg. At the time, Smith also battled sepsis and fought for his life, going through 17 surgeries. The 36-year-old also could've lost his leg.

While his Sunday performance wasn't outstanding, his return to the field was impressive alone. Smith could start next week's game against the New York Giants, but that'll only be if Allen is unable to play and if, for some reason, Ron Rivera opts to start Dwayne Haskins after benching him.

If Smith gets the opportunity, he'll be looking to return to the form he once had before being injured.
