Alge Crumpler Shares His Thoughts on Michael Penix Jr.
Dale Zanine, Imagn Images

You name it, he did it. However, he didn’t do it in an overly showy way. Alge Crumpler was just old school, with a bring the lunch pail to work attitude. When you revisit some of the electrifying highlight reel runs from Vick & Dunn, you’ll often see them initiated by a block from Crumpler.

Don’t misunderstand me, the statistics are remarkable too, scoring in the end zone 39 times and representing the Falcons in the Pro Bowl on four occasions.

It was a privilege to reconnect with one of the greatest Falcons of all time.

Craig: When I think of your career, it really kick-started in 2003 which culminated in your first pro bowl selection and winning that playoff game at Lambeau Field.

Alge: I had a great time. I came in back in 2001 and brought some energy to the franchise. It was awesome being part of that Michael Vick draft. We made that playoff run, won in Green Bay, and then the next year reached the NFC Championship. We had some good times.

Craig: You mention Michael Vick. What was it like playing with him every day?

Alge: We had a lot of fun! We were basically practice squad guys the first couple of months. I would get yelled at because Mike was supposed to throw the ball to someone else, but we had worked something out beforehand and had such a special bond.

Craig: Speaking of quarterbacks, have you been impressed by Michael Penix Jr.?

Alge: He’s a smart quarterback with a really good arm. He had a chance to learn last season and his teammates seem to rally around him. I think that’s a great formula.

Craig: What’s a day in the life like now for Alge Crumpler?

Alge: Atlanta is my permanent home now and I bump into Falcons fans all the time and have great conversations. I'm mostly just raising my daughters these days. I also do volunteer work in North Carolina and sit on a couple of boards, but I’m mostly Daddy Uber.
