Alonzo Highsmith Has Interest in Dolphins GM Job

Former Miami Hurricanes running back and current New England Patriots personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith has expressed interest in the open Miami Dolphins general manager position to people, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Highsmith was the 3rd overall pick of the 1987 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. During his NFL career, he played for Houston, Dallas, and Tampa. He also spent time on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad his final year before retiring.

Since retiring, Highsmith has pivoted and become an NFL Front Office executive.

He got his start in Green Bay as a Senior Personnel Executive from 2012 to 2017.

Then he moved to Seattle, where he was the Vice President of Player Personnel from 2018 to 2019.

From 2020 to 2022, he was a personnel executive in Seattle.

Then, in late 2022, he went back home to the Miami Hurricanes to be their GM of Football Operations for two seasons.

And then in 2024, he became a personnel executive with the New England Patriots.

At 60 years old, Highsmith is undoubtedly qualified to be an NFL general manager at this stage of his career, and the fact that he has spent time in two highly successful NFL front offices makes him an attractive candidate.

With that said, there is no confirmation or report of Miami having interest in Highsmith; this is coming from Alonzo himself that he has interest in the open position.

I fully expect the Miami Dolphins to cast a wide net in their search come January when they begin the process of finding a new general manager.

It was reported Saturday morning by Dianna Russini that Miami is looking to reshape the vision of its front office, so do not expect Miami to only meet with a couple of people and make a quick hire come January 2026.

I suspect this will drag out some, and the search will go into February, and we may not have an announcement on any new hire until around or after the Super Bowl.

One thing that is ironic about this story is that before being hired by the Miami Dolphins as a scout in 2000, Chris Grier had worked for the Patriots.

Like Highsmith does now.
