Chiefs HC Andy Reid had convincing sales pitch for free-agent linebacker

The Kansas City Chiefs added some significant defensive depth this offseason by landing linebacker Drue Tranquill on a one-year deal from AFC West rival Los Angeles.

Tranquill revealed this week what the tipping point was for him to choose the Chiefs as his next destination.

During Thursday's episode of NFL Total Access, Tranquill said the Chiefs were extremely aggressive in their pursuit of him, and on the morning of his decision he got a very convincing text message from Reid with the best possible sales pitch any NFL team could provide -- Super Bowls.

From NFL.com.

"Andy Reid literally texted me the morning of [when] I was going to make my decision and he was like, 'Think red. Think red. Think Super Bowls.' I just felt really valued over there, felt like they really had a role for me and really wanted me over there."

Every team is going to try and sell a potential free agent on why they are the team that can win a Super Bowl, but the Chiefs are the one team in the NFL right now that can actually make that argument convincingly.

Since Patrick Mahomes became the team's starting quarterback in 2018, the Chiefs have reached at least the AFC Championship game every single season and already played in three Super Bowls, winning two of them. No other team in the league has a run like that right now, and they are going to be the odds on favorites to win again this season. As long as Mahomes is healthy and teamed up with Reid, they are going to be a force in the AFC.

Tranquill is also a really solid addition to help add some depth to the defense.

After being a role player for the first three years of his career, he took over a starting role in 2022 and put together a career season that saw him record 146 combined tackles, five sacks, eight quarterback hits, a forced fumble, four pass defenses and an interception.
