Cowboys special teams coordinator on improbable 'watermelon' onside kick: 'It worked out pretty good'

The Cowboys' incredible comeback win was filled with unforgettable moments but none were as memorable as the onside kick that allowed Dallas to drive down the field and win the game on a last-second field goal. It was perhaps the most impressive onside kick in NFL history, as it managed to slowly roll in a way that caused the Falcons' special teams to hesitate and allowed the Cowboys to grab the ball.

Cowboys special teams coordinator John "Bones" Fassel spoke about the improbable kick and the perfect execution by his unit, saying that the ball almost resembled a watermelon in its slow roll.

"We didn't really have a specific name for it, but it is really the 'Watermelon Kick' -- where it's laying on the turf like a watermelon," Fassel told reporters. "And you spin it like a watermelon would spin, but it spins a lot better than a watermelon."

Fassel confirmed that the team had practiced the kick before but executing it in a practice is a lot different than pulling it off in a game, especially when you are in the middle of one of the most exciting comebacks in recent memory. Onside kicks are notoriously hard to pull off, let alone one with that level of precision. When asked about its success, Fassel gave a short but incredibly accurate assessment.

"It worked out pretty good," Fassel said in the understatement of the decade.

Thanks to the onside recovery, the Cowboys are now 1-1 as they face off against the Seahawks, who laid a beatdown on the Falcons in Week 1, on Sunday.
