Insider shares promising update on Giants' Saquon Barkley
There remains hope that the New York Giants and star running back Saquon Barkley will come to terms on a long-term contract before the July 17 deadline for teams to sign franchise-tagged players arrives.
"I just checked in on this and I was told there’s no hard-and-fast update right now, but there is at least some level of optimism that these sides can come to an agreement at some point," ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said during a "SportsCenter" segment, per John Fennelly of Giants Wire/USA Today. "They’ve been talking throughout the offseason. Giants ownership values Barkley; he’s considered a centerpiece-type player for them. But Barkley wants a stronger contract structure, most likely stronger guarantees in how that contract is structured. So, [the] Giants have to find a sweet spot there."
It's thought Barkley's camp is looking for roughly $22.22M guaranteed via a new deal to match the price of this year's franchise tag combined with next year's. If he and the Giants don't agree to a new contract before the July 17 deadline, he'll be set to earn $10.091M attached to the tag for the upcoming season.
Barkley hasn't yet signed the tag and suggested last month he could stay away from the Giants through the start of the regular season. Most assume that's an empty threat, and even Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce essentially advised Barkley to eventually report to the Giants before they open the season.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones made it known he is "talking all the time" and "staying in touch" with Barkley. Logic suggests that indicates the 26-year-old ball-carrier is committed to giving the 2023 Giants his all even if he doesn't receive a deal to his liking later this month.
