An optimist's guide to the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles

After beating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, no team has better odds (+600) to win another championship than the Philadelphia Eagles. Here’s why fans should be optimistic.

1. Continuity

Last year, Philadelphia averaged 27.2 points per game in the regular season and 36.5 points per game in the playoffs. This year, the team will bring back 10 of 11 offensive starters including Saquon Barkley, the NFL’s leading rusher.

After finishing 2024 with the most rush yards (2,504) and scrimmage yards (2,857) in a single season (playoffs included), the 28-year-old running back received a two-year, $41M extension from the Eagles, making him the NFL’s highest-paid running back. Offensive linemen Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens, both Pro Bowlers, also signed new contracts with the team.

They’ll have to make do without right guard Mekhi Becton, though. The 6-foot-7, 363-pound former Jet outplayed the one-year, $2.75M contract he signed with the Eagles in 2024 and agreed to a two-year, $20M deal with the Chargers in 2025. He’ll be replaced by Tyler Steen, the team’s third-round pick in 2023, who started two games and played 316 snaps for Philadelphia last season.

2. Head Coach

Nick Sirianni also signed a contract extension in the offseason, although terms were not disclosed. Since taking over the team in 2021, Sirianni’s teams have gone 48-20 (.706) in the regular season and 6-3 (.667) in the playoffs, giving him a record of 54-23 (.701) overall.

Ironically, Sirianni’s often erratic behavior on the sidelines and in news conferences undermines what could be his greatest strength: humility. Halfway through the 2021 regular season, the first-year head coach quietly gave play-calling responsibilities to offensive coordinator and current head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Shane Steichen.

Last year, after a 2-2 start to the regular season, the 43-year-old head coach wasn’t afraid to take the ball out of quarterback Jalen Hurts hands and hand it to Barkley a league-high 345 times.

Sirianni will be counted on even more with Kevin Patullo taking over for Kellen Moore, now head coach of the Saints, as a first-time offensive coordinator. But as long as he continues to focus on organization and motivation duties, Philadelphia will be fine.

3. Young talent

Per Philly Voice’s Jimmy Kempski, the Eagles entered last season with the NFL’s sixth-youngest roster with an average age of 25.6 years. Since then, cornerbacks Cooper DeJean (22) and Quinyon Mitchell (23) were each nominated for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, defensive tackle Jalen Carter (24) earned his first Pro Bowl nomination and linemate Jordan Davis (25) had his $12.9M option picked up for 2026.

The team also took top-rated linebacker Jihaad Campbell (21) with the 31st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, a steal in the eyes of many assuming he recovers from offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Of course, with a league-high 13 picks projected for next year’s draft, don’t be surprised to see the Eagles trade some of them for more young talent before the start of the regular season.

4. Philly fans

Eagles fans aren’t about to let the reigning Super Bowl champions rest on their laurels. The parade was nice but Hurts will be booed after his first interception, Barkley after his first fumble and Sirianni after his first bad decision.

That, and 69,600 screaming fans at Lincoln Financial Field should be enough to keep players and coaches on their toes as Philadelphia looks to punch its ticket for Super Bowl LX.
