Analyst: 49ers trading QB Jimmy Garoppolo to Cowboys 'makes no sense'

Fans of the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are both involved in some awkward conversations regarding the quarterback situations of those clubs coming off the first Sunday of the 2022 NFL season.

Trey Lance made his first start as San Francisco's full-time QB1 for Sunday's game at the Chicago Bears and struggled mightily in monsoon-like conditions. The second-year pro completed just 13-of-28 passes for 164 yards and was guilty of a costly fourth-quarter interception that halted a comeback attempt. The 49ers ultimately fell 19-10.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, lost both their home opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19-3 and star quarterback Dak Prescott, who is on track to miss six-to-eight weeks with the thumb injury he suffered in that defeat. Some have suggested Dallas should look to land veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who accepted a pay cut to remain with the 49ers as their QB2 via a restructured team-friendly deal that theoretically could make him easy to trade to a club in need of a signal-caller.

Sporting News senior content producer Jacob Camenker isn't sold on the idea of Dallas and San Francisco doing business for multiple reasons.

For starters, Camenker thinks the 49ers may have a high asking price attached to Garoppolo's services. For what it is worth, San Francisco general manager John Lynch recently denied telling teams earlier this year "that he (had) an offer in hand of two second-round picks for Garoppolo," and it's unclear what Lynch would want from Dallas or any team for the 30-year-old today.

Camenker notes that both the 49ers and Cowboys could find themselves competing over a wild-card playoff berth later in the season. He also pointed out that "Garoppolo gives the 49ers insurance and stability in case Lance's struggles aren't isolated to one game."

Some fans phoning into local sports talk radio shows are already calling for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan to go back to the two-time NFC Championship Game and one-time Super Bowl starter for this coming Sunday's home opener versus the division-rival Seattle Seahawks.

Per ESPN stats, Lance entered Monday 29th out of 30 eligible quarterbacks with a 50.3 passer rating and 19th with a 43.1 total QBR.

As of now, the Cowboys are set to start unproven backup Cooper Rush for at least the Week 2 contest against the 0-1 Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. One wonders if Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will explore trading for Garoppolo if his team is 0-2 by Monday morning.
