There is no question the Las Vegas Raiders can win games behind quarterback Geno Smith. He did it for the Seattle Seahawks, going 28-24 in five seasons and notching a playoff berth in 2022 with quality wide receivers like DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
In an ESPN article published Friday, Dan Orlovsky named the Raiders' acquisition of Smith as the No. 2 free-agency quarterback move behind Sam Darnold going to the Seattle Seahawks.
"Las Vegas can win with Smith. Expect a lot of play-action passing with new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly," Orlovsky wrote. "The Raiders missed out on last year's QB draft class, and there is no guarantee they can get a top passer at No. 6 in next month's draft (though this move shouldn't keep them from drafting a QB). They added a veteran who can help them win right away, especially if the team also adds another receiver or two."
Note the word "if." The Raiders have not helped Smith so far in free agency. The only wide receivers remaining on the roster who started this past season are Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker, along with star tight end Brock Bowers. After that, there is not another well-known name who could pick up the slack.
Meyers is more of a No. 2 receiver than anything else. Sure, he's come up big in certain situations and picked up his first 1,000-yard season (1,027 yards) in 2024 in six seasons in the NFL.
Besides him and Bowers, though, there is not another player who could go in the starting lineup and be the No. 1 receiver. That needs to change fast before it is too late.
There are top receivers remaining in free agency. Yardbarker recently listed Cooper Kupp, Tyler Lockett and Stefon Diggs as three players the Raiders should target.
Getting Kupp would be a long shot since he's likely going to command big money. Lockett would be a slam dunk since he has played with Smith and was coached by new Raiders coach Pete Carroll, but there has been no news of an imminent signing.
Keenan Allen could be also be a possibility for the Raiders. The former Chargers and Bears wide receiver finished with just 744 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last season and could be looking to bounce back in a big way in 2025.
The Raiders have $47.5M in cap space, according to Over The Cap. It is possible they will select a receiver in the 2025 NFL Draft, but for now, the Silver and Black should bring in a veteran wide receiver who will aid Smith, Meyers and Bowers.
