Cowboys under fire over contract negotiations with Micah Parsons

It seems to never end with the Dallas Cowboys as they continue to make headlines for all the wrong reasons going into the 2025 season.

While star defensive players like San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa ($34M), Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett ($40M) and Pittsburgh Steelers LB T.J. Watt ($41M) have each signed contract extensions within the last few years and make an average of at least $34M per year, Cowboys DE Micah Parsons is entering the final season of his rookie contract that will pay him $24M as part of his fifth-year option.

ESPN NFL analyst Ryan Clark was on Thursday's edition of "First Take" and was asked what it would mean for the Cowboys moving forward if they were to let Parsons walk as stalled contract negotiations between the two persist.

"What that means to me is that you aren't trying to compete for a championship right now," Clark said. ..."Your job is to draft, develop and retain the best players. Well, you got Micah Parsons at a slot in the draft where he was available to you and shouldn't have been. So, you made the right decision. You drafted the player and then you developed him. You started as an off the ball linebacker, he moved on the ball to become a rush end and now he's one of the most prolific in the history of the game. And so now, you get to take the next step and do the right thing, which is retain Micah Parsons and find a way to build around him."

Parsons has recorded 52.5 sacks during his four years with Dallas and was tied for the seventh-most sacks last season with 12. He was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 and is a two-time First-Team All-Pro.

This is a position that Clark feels the Cowboys should have never been in and one they have put themselves in multiple times before.

"Now here is where you messed up. You messed up because you had that opportunity last year. And if you do that last year when Nick Bosa's being paid around $34M a year, you don't have to get to this point and think to yourself, 'We're gonna have to pay upwards of $42M, $43M a year,'" Clark said. "So you have backed yourself into this corner. A corner, by the way, that you backed yourself into with Ezekiel Elliott, a corner you backed yourself into with CeeDee Lamb, a corner you backed yourself into with Dak Prescott."

A recent update on the contract dispute only adds to the drama as Parsons and the Cowboys do not seem to be on the same page when it comes to an extension.

Elliott, Lamb and Prescott eventually received massive paydays, so perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel for the 26-year-old All-Pro. While he has been a participant in Cowboys training camp, he has made it clear that he is not pleased with how the contract talks have gone.

Given the deals other star defenders have received, you would think it would just be a matter of time before Parsons joins them and gets his share. Keep in mind, though, this is nothing new for Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, who continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons off the field.

This team has the talent, but until it starts making noise on the field instead of away from it, it will be the same old story for the Cowboys, who seem to put themselves in this position time and again.
