Objectively speaking, the Los Angeles Chargers have several players who should be at least somewhat attractive trade assets for other teams. Veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack could help put a number of teams over the top, veteran cornerback Donte Jackson could help several teams, and safety Derwin James Jr. and even wide receiver Quentin Johnston could have real trade value.
But it looks like that isn’t the way the Chargers see it. According to at least one report, the franchise appears intent on standing pat ahead of the NFL’s Nov. 10 trade deadline, even though most people around the league have expected them to be big sellers.
Unless this is your standard pre-deadline posturing, it doesn’t make sense.
According to Jonathan Jones of The Athletic, the Chargers’ apparent unwillingness to trade any of their players has “confounded” other teams.
“The Chargers have confounded teams by not engaging in trade talks,” Jones wrote. “The Bolts are 0-6 but are telling teams Khalil Mack isn’t available. It’s hard to envision that remaining the case over the next 10 days.”
Mack, who is 35 years of age, is continuing to play at a high level, despite the Chargers’ many problems. Through six games, he has registered three sacks, six quarterback hits, five tackles for loss, and teams can almost never have enough pass rushing, especially in today’s pass-happy NFL.
Jackson, 30, hasn’t played since Week 4 because of a hamstring injury. He has made eight total tackles (six solo), two passes defended and one tackle for loss through four games, and he could provide a boost for a team looking to get to the next level.
The Chargers need an infusion of young talent, especially on offense, where their offensive line, even when healthy, is suspect and they lack a true No. 1 option at the wide receiver position. Trading away players such as Mack and Jackson would allow them to accumulate draft picks and put themselves in position to bring in more difference-makers as soon as this offseason.
Perhaps general manager Joe Hortiz will be willing to engage with other teams in trade discussions in the coming days. But for now, fans are questioning what in the world he is thinking when he is reportedly refusing to consider making any trades.
