Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to get back to the drawing board after finishing the 2025 NFL season with a 6-11 record, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Chiefs will now look toward free agency in hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five years.

Despite Kansas City's struggles in 2025, quarterback Patrick Mahomes still proved to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The former Texas Tech star completed 315-of-502 passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 14 games played. However, a torn ACL ended Mahomes' season early, leaving the backups to finish out the year. But now, one of those reserve QBs will be heading elsewhere.

Gardner Minshew, after finishing his college career with Washington State, was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the Jaguars, earning the starting quarterback role, before he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles two years later.

Over the next four seasons, Minshew spent the majority of his time as a backup with the Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders, excluding 2023 when he earned the starting job in Indianapolis and secured his only Pro Bowl nod. In 2025, Minshew elected to join the Chiefs, spending much of the year as Mahomes' backup. However, in the four games he appeared in for Kansas City, Minshew completed 6-of-13 passes for 37 yards and an interception.

But following the season, Minshew saw his one-year deal with the Chiefs come to an end, making him an unrestricted free agent. And on Monday, he decided it was time for a change, signing a one-year, $8 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The move helps the Cardinals replace Kyler Murray and leaves Reid searching for another backup for Mahomes.

"Source: Former Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew II reached agreement today on a one-year, $8 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals," ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote on X.

On the bright side for Reid and the Chiefs, tight end Travis Kelce has opted to return for a 14th season, signing a one-year extension with Kansas City.
