Andy Reid delivers blunt assessment of what Chiefs must change to beat Eagles after disappointing loss to Chargers in Brazil

SÃO PAULO — The Kansas City Chiefs went to halftime in Brazil with only six points on the board. The passing offense did become more effective and consistent to drive the ball down the field in the second half, but the effort wasn't enough to beat the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. The 27-21 loss creates a level of pressure over the team, especially because the next opponent is the defending Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid was clear. The offense has to start faster for the team to have a real shot at being consistently good. Losing Xavier Worthy early on was a big hit, but they found a way around it in the second half.

"I thought it was kind of a tale of two halves in the passing game," Andy Reid said. "In the first half, we were a little off, but in the second half it picked up. We hit a few more explosive plays and found a better rhythm. Again, I’ve got to make sure we start faster."

Explosive plays

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes missed some deep throws to Tyquan Thornton, but also was able to complete some in the second half. Reid knows that, even if the big plays won't always be there, it's important to keep trying.

"We normally like to mix and match, but we did take a few more shots," Reid mentioned. "We completed a few and missed on a couple. But you’ve got to keep firing in those situations and work through it."

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, but it wasn't necessarily a clean defensive performance. Dak Prescott completed 21 of 34 passes for 188 yards, but CeeDee Lamb had multiple drops. If the Chiefs can be more explosive than they were in Brazil, there will be a realistic path to avoid a 0-2 start to the season.

The Chiefs have a rough schedule over the first third of the year. Until Week 6, Kansas City still faces the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions.
