The Kansas City Chiefs have wrapped up their mandatory minicamp, and will now have approximately the next five weeks off before training camp begins in late July.
Coach Andy Reid has made a change to the beginning of training camp, as all players will report on the same day, which will be Monday, July 21. In the past, quarterbacks, rookies, and injured players reported a few days earlier than everyone else. Here's what Reid had to say about that decision while speaking to the media on Thursday:
"We don't have a ton of guys that we could bring there," Reid said. "So, I didn't feel like that [would be] a valuable time. We got the rookies here with extra time, so we took advantage of that and done that throughout the whole offseason program. So, I thought we got to accomplish what we needed to."
Reid has a reputation for running the toughest training camp in the NFL, so him feeling comfortable enough with his rookies to not make them report early is a big endorsement for them. The Chiefs don't have a ton of injuries currently, so that's not a big concern either.
In regards to the quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes obviously doesn't need the extra time, and veterans Gardner Minshew and Bailey Zappe should also be fine. With the NFL offseason continually getting shorter, a few extra days off can go a long way. It appears that the Chiefs got in a lot of quality work throughout OTAs and minicamp, which hopefully carries over to training camp.
