Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs missed out on the NFL playoffs for just the second time in his lengthy tenure with the team, finishing the 2025 season with a 6-11 record and a six-game losing streak. Now, the Chiefs will be looking to make major changes to the coaching staff, with offensive coordinator Matt Nagy likely on his way out.
Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers, on the other hand, had a different ending to the 2025 season. They were able to squeeze their way into the postseason after a Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens, securing the AFC North title and the No. 4 seed in the AFC Playoffs.
The Steelers also saw their season end early, falling 30-6 to C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round finale. With Aaron Rodgers likely nearing retirement, Pittsburgh will be facing significant changes this offseason, including a search for a potential new quarterback and a new head coach.
On Tuesday, one day after Pittsburgh’s loss to Houston, Tomlin announced he was stepping down as head coach of the Steelers after 19 seasons. He departs with a Super Bowl XLIII title and an overall record of 193-114-2.
"After much thought and reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Tomlin said in a statement. "This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team. I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support."
Before his departure, Tomlin was the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, leading Pittsburgh from 2007 to 2025. With his exit, that honor now belongs to Reid, who has coached the Chiefs since 2013 and is set to enter his 14th season in 2026. The Rams' Sean McVay, the 49ers' Kyle Shanahan and the Bills' Sean McDermott are tied for second with nine seasons.
While Reid has been with Kansas City for more than a decade, he still has a long way to go to become the longest-tenured head coach in NFL history. Former Green Bay Packers coach Curly Lambeau (1921-49) and Dallas Cowboys legend Tom Landry (1960-88) share the record with 29 seasons each. Don Shula ranks second with 26 seasons spent with the Miami Dolphins (1970-95), while Bill Belichick is third with 24 seasons leading the New England Patriots (2000-23).

While Tomlin awaits what comes next, reports indicate he will not coach during the 2026 season, leaving his long-term future uncertain.
