Andy Reid Makes Statement After Chiefs Announce Retirement of Veteran Coach

Coming off a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX to end the 2024 NFL season, the Kansas City Chiefs announced the retirement of assistant special teams coach Andy Hill ahead of the 2025 season.

While quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce formed the braintrust of head coach Andy Reid's offense and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo elevated the defense, Hill won two Super Bowls during his five-year tenure with Kansas City.

The Chiefs have won an NFL record 17 consecutive one-score games, including an 11-0 record in the 2024 regular season. In these games, the small margins on special teams carried outsized importance.

Beyond the impact on the gridiron, Reid emphasized in a statement that Hill would be missed for his personality around the team every day.

"He is Mr. Missouri, he knows everybody," Reid said of Hill at Chiefs OTAs on Thursday. "I’m not just saying that, he knows everybody. He’s got a great attitude."

Hill played in college for the Missouri Tigers and made his way back to Columbia as a coach in 1996. He spent 23 seasons on the Missouri staff, becoming one of the longest-tenured assistants in program history and an inductee to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

After Hill's retirement, running backs coach Porter Ellett became the new assistant special teams coach before his ninth season with Kansas City. He will work under Chiefs' assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Dave Toub in 2025.

"We’ll miss him," Reid added on Hill. "Porter has moved over to that, who’s a good young football coach. He’ll do a nice job, but it was nice to have Andy here for the years he was here. He was very well-liked.”
