Anthony Richardson has had a rollercoaster of a football career thus far. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback made just 13 starts with the Florida Gators in college before the Colts drafted him with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since then, he has started 15 regular-season games for Indianapolis and has dealt with nagging injuries.
It seemed all offseason to Florida and Colts fans alike that Richardson would be the starter during the 2025 season.
However, with the Colts' season opener against the Miami Dolphins set for Sept. 7, head coach Shane Steichen has other plans for the former Florida star.
On Tuesday, Steichen and the Colts announced that former New York Giants signal-caller Daniel Jones will be the team's starting quarterback over Richardson to start the 2025 season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
This is a gut punch to Richardson fans, who thought the 6-foot-4, 244-pounder had the starting role in the bag. Jones signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in March, while Richardson is entering the third year of his rookie deal.
Richardson started the Colts' first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, and went 2-of-3 passing for 21 yards before leaving the game with a hand injury sustained on the team's second drive. Jones then started the Colts' second preseason matchup this past weekend, playing two drives before Richardson replaced him.
Overall, Jones has gone 17-of-32 passing for 245 yards through the team's first two preseason games, while Richardson went 8-of-14 for 94 yards through the air.
This decision is deflating to Florida fans who hoped to see their former quarterback shine in Indianapolis this year.
