Anthony Richardson ‘Frustrated’ Over Injury Amidst QB Battle With Daniel Jones

Anthony Richardson’s return from injury was supposed to mark a fresh start. Instead, it’s brought familiar frustration. The Colts’ second-year quarterback is again sidelined, this time due to renewed soreness in the same right shoulder that required surgery last season. The timing couldn't be worse with a high-stakes quarterback competition unfolding in Indianapolis.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed this week that Richardson will be held out of minicamp practices due to inflammation in his AC joint. Although the team doesn’t expect additional procedures to be necessary, the setback has halted Richardson’s progress just as he hoped to solidify his position atop the depth chart.

“It’s just a bit of irritation,” Steichen said, noting they’ll ease Richardson back into throwing once the discomfort subsides. But for Richardson, the issue goes deeper than discomfort—it’s about rhythm, reps, and opportunity.

After a promising start to his rookie campaign, Richardson’s 2023 season was cut short by the initial shoulder injury. Add in other physical setbacks over his brief career, and Richardson has already missed more games than he’s played. With just four career starts, limited development time, and a career completion rate under 51%, his learning curve remains steep.

Now, while Richardson rests, Daniel Jones takes full advantage of first-team reps. The former Giants quarterback, signed this offseason to compete for the job, has already drawn praise for his command of the offense and quick grasp of Steichen’s system. According to an ESPN report, Jones has impressed with his decisiveness and understanding of what’s being asked of him during team sessions.

For Richardson, the situation is undoubtedly aggravating. This was his moment to take the offense's reins and prove himself as the franchise’s long-term answer. Instead, he’s watching from the sidelines as a veteran challenger builds momentum.

There’s still time before training camp and preseason games begin, but the pressure is growing. Richardson’s athleticism and potential are unquestioned, but durability and consistency are what the Colts need now. If this shoulder issue lingers—or if Jones continues to gain the coaching staff's trust—Richardson may find himself in a steeper uphill battle than anticipated.

One thing’s clear: the quarterback picture in Indianapolis remains unsettled, and Richardson’s latest setback only adds more uncertainty to the mix.
