Are fines for Packers, Aaron Rodgers breaking protocol enough?

The saga of Aaron Rodgers breaking COVID protocols rolls on this week with news the NFL fined the Green Bay Packers $300,000 and Rodgers and wide receiver Allen Lazard each $14,650, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Of course, now there's a debate whether or not that fine is enough to make an example out of the disgruntled quarterback, who put his teammates "in jeopardy" by disregarding health and safety protocols.

To refresh: Rodgers and the team came under serious fire last week after the reigning MVP tested positive for COVID-19 and it was revealed he hadn't been up-front with the press about being vaccinated against the virus, which he is not. The situation became more serious given Rodgers had been conducting press conferences and hanging out with teammates without a mask on, and the team knew he wasn't vaccinated and allowed him to skirt the protocols agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA.

As far as the fine for the team goes, a source told ESPN "the Packers' cooperation with the investigation was taken into consideration, but the team was warned that future violations could result in increased discipline, including possible change in draft position or loss of draft choice."

It's the fine issued to Rodgers that seems to have football fans and talking heads alike up in arms.

Quick reminder, the NFL announced over the summer it would fine unvaccinated players that same $14,650 for breaking protocols. That includes Rodgers and Lazard. Plus, the league only found a few isolated instances in which the two players broke protocol and weren't wearing masks — including a Halloween party that took place right before Rodgers tested positive.

Nevertheless, many still don't think the amount of the fine is enough given Rodgers' salary.

There's also the issue of consistency when it comes to other fines the league has handed down.

Rodgers will be able to come out of a 10-day mandated quarantine later this week in time for the Packers' matchup against the visiting Seattle Seahawks this weekend if he passes protocol, at which point his behavior will likely remain under a microscope. If he continues to try maneuvering around league protocols, it's likely many will call for him to be punished even further.

This Rodgers-centered fiasco is clearly far from over. Now it's just a matter of seeing what happens when he next speaks with the media this week.
