If anyone’s interested in Hall of Fame-caliber players beefing against each other, then stick around because this is a juicy one. Former New England Patriots All-Pro cornerback Asante Samuel Sr. claimed with all his gusto that one of the best wide receivers of all time is overrated. And the athlete Samuel targeted is Minnesota Vikings legend Cris Carter.
Now the question arises: what pushed Samuel to brand Carter as an overrated receiver? Carter’s bust is in Canton along with other greats like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Samuel did not seem to care too much.
Carter was in his prime when Samuel learned his trade at the University of Central Florida. He studied the 8x Pro Bowler very closely and discovered that even though Carter had great hands, his route running had issues.
He was nothing more than a possession receiver… a receiver that catches the ball and is immediately tackled… Cris Carter is one of the most overrated [wide receivers] to ever come into the NFL or into the Hall of Fame.
Asante Samuel declared on his podcast
The 44-year-old deduced that he could close down Carter easily, as the wideout made very little separation after catching the ball.
He’s going to run a nice, crispy route and get tackled immediately. I am not worried about him running past me. So, what fear does he put in any cornerback or defense?
Samuel added
Wild: Asante Samuel calls out Cris Carter, labeling him one of the most overrated wide receivers in NFL history.

Cris Carter is a Hall of Famer with 13,899 yards and 130 TDs in his career…
What an awful take pic.twitter.com/g7T30KmZk4
These are very wild takes from a respected DB about a player who dominated every defense of his era. Carter literally had more receptions, receiving yardage, and receiving touchdowns than any player in league history (at that point) who was not named Jerry Rice.
Carter played 16 NFL seasons, divided into three different franchises. After spending the initial three years in Philadelphia, Carter achieved legendary status in Minnesota but played his final year in Miami before retiring in 2002. Carter appeared in 234 games, catching 1101 passes for 13899 yards and 130 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
Well, believe it or not, Samuel threw Carter under the bus to defend Chad Johnson . Yes, the same flamboyant co-host of the Nightcap pod with HOF Shannon Sharpe.
Johnson was one of the best receivers of his generation. He racked up 766 successful catches for 11,059 yards and 67 touchdowns in 11 seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Patriots before stints in Canada and Mexico.
However, the HOF has continued to elude him even after a decade of retirement. He has advocated for a place among the football royalty, but Carter doesn’t believe Ochocinco deserves the Gold Jacket.
There’s nothing that pi--es me off more than old guys who used to be able to do something, and when they recall what they did, they swear up and down that it was better than how they did it.

What did Chad Johnson do to Cris Carter?

Talked about this man like he was a scrub. Ocho is top 40 all time in catches and yards, and just outside top 50 in touchdowns.. more TDs than Julio Jones, Mike Irvin, Sterling Sharpe, and many others. More yards than 15 current HOF WRs.… pic.twitter.com/a6Zi3rwtBB
This ticked Asante Samuel off, and he went after Carter like a hound dog. There will always be debates about who should be in the HOF and who should not. Most recently, two-time Super Bowl winner and Giants legend Eli Manning was snubbed from the HOF, while his older brother, Peyton Manning, who also won two rings, has been a member for nearly nine years.
