Column: Same Falcons. Different Coaches. Same Old Circus.

If Day 1 of Atlanta Falcons training camp was supposed to signal a new era, it instead felt like the opening act of the same show we’ve watched for years.

Different head coach.

Different front office.

Same Falcons.

This franchise has become the king of football purgatory. Never bad enough to fully rebuild. Never good enough to seriously contend. Just stuck in the NFL’s most dangerous place: the middle.

On paper, the roster is loaded.

Bijan Robinson is one of the most dynamic running backs in football. Drake London is a legitimate No. 1 receiver. The offensive line has talent. The defense has invested heavily in young playmakers. There are pieces here that plenty of franchises would love to have.

And yet the biggest question on the roster remains the same one it has been for years.

Quarterback.

Atlanta had opportunities to pursue proven answers. Instead, the franchise has doubled down on Michael Penix Jr., betting that the former Washington star can become the long-term face of the organization. The Falcons also added Tua Tagovailoa, another quarterback whose career has been defined as much by injuries as production.

That’s a massive gamble.

Penix possesses a beautiful left-handed release and made countless jaw-dropping throws in college. Tua has been one of the NFL’s most accurate passers when healthy. Neither one are good enough to start in the NFL, according to our in-house NFL analyst.

The problem is those last two words.

When healthy.

NFL Sundays don’t care about college highlight tapes.

They care about availability.

The Falcons are betting the most important position in sports on two quarterbacks whose durability has been questioned throughout their careers.

That’s not bold.

That’s risky.

Meanwhile, Day 1 brought more distractions than optimism. Bijan Robinson’s contract situation has become a storyline before meaningful football has even begun, while questions also surrounded the absence of the team’s defensive coordinator.

It’s only the first day of camp.

And already the conversation isn’t centered on football.

Again.

This is the cycle Atlanta can’t seem to escape.

Every offseason begins with optimism.

Every summer brings unanswered questions.

Every fall ends with fans wondering why another talented roster somehow finished 8-9 or 9-8.

The Saints won’t stay down forever.

Carolina has invested heavily in its future.

Tampa Bay continues finding ways to compete.

The NFC South isn’t waiting for Atlanta to figure itself out.

The most frustrating part?

The talent is there.

It always seems to be.

The Falcons draft well enough. They sign enough free agents. Every August, analysts convince themselves this roster is finally ready to take the next step.

Then September arrives.

Then October.

Then reality.

Until this organization solves quarterback and finally establishes a consistent identity, nothing really changes.

Different faces.

Different press conferences.

Different slogans.

Same Falcons.

At some point, “next year” has to become “this year.”

Atlanta has spent far too long asking its fans for patience.

Eventually, patience runs out up at the Branch.
