Austin Ekeler has had one of the more heartwarming NFL stories in recent memory.
He carved out a roster spot with the Los Angeles Chargers back in 2017 after going undrafted and the rest is history.
The star running back didn’t get many carries that first season, but as his role got bigger in subsequent years, his production increased accordingly.
Ekeler rushed for over 900 yards and double digit touchdowns in consecutive seasons in 2021 and 2022, but unfortunately injuries took a toll on him which played into his exit from Los Angeles.
The Western Colorado product signed with the Washington Commanders last offseason and he is finally opening up on his messy breakup with the Chargers.
Ekeler saw fewer carries this past season because he is now sharing a backfield with another stud tailback in Brian Robinson Jr.
The ninth-year man somewhat rejuvenated his career with 700 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns in just 12 games.
Entering his first contract season with Washington, Ekeler detailed his experiences the last time he tried to negotiate a deal.
“I’m coming off of my second year leading the league in touchdowns, and I go to the Chargers and I’m like, ‘Hey, let’s get an extension.’ I had one year left on my contract so they didn’t have to move anywhere. I’m like, ‘Oh, so you don’t want to pay me, but you want a first-round pick?’ So I learned a little about leverage and being in a position to negotiate things like that. For myself, I was in a position where I didn’t really have any leverage.”
This time around, the Commanders will likely be determined to keep a loaded weapon stash around star quarterback Jayden Daniels which should increase Ekeler’s chances of getting paid.
If he is able to stave off the injury bug then there is no reason why he shouldn’t produce even more than he did last season.
