Tampa Bay Buccaneers veterans are set to report for training camp on July 28. That includes quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is entering his fourth season with the team.
However, there are questions about his future with Tampa Bay. The 31-year-old is playing under the final season of a three-year, $100 million contract and is set to hit free agency in 2027. During OTAs on June 5, he spoke to reporters and admitted that he and the Buccaneers were "not anywhere close" on an extension.
Since joining the team in 2023, he's led Tampa Bay to two playoff appearances and gone 27-24 in 51 starts.
However, Mayfield and the Buccaneers continue to work on a new deal. At his annual youth camp in Norman, Oklahoma, the two-time Pro Bowler said that he and his family are motivated to stay in Tampa Bay.
“I think both sides want to get it done,” Mayfield said in an X video posted by KFOR's Kailey Carnine. “It’s a matter of finding that middle ground and what makes both sides happy. You know, like I fell in love with Norman, our family, we fell in love with Tampa Bay, and it’s a great place to raise kids and be around.”

Mayfield is in a position for a big pay bump from the Buccaneers. Spotrac projects his market value could fetch a four-year, $214.4 million contract. A yearly salary of $53.6 million would be the eighth highest of any quarterback in the NFL.
As Tampa Bay moves closer to training camp, Mayfield's contract situation will be one of the team's key storylines. Going into a contract year, the Buccaneers must weigh their options at quarterback, whether it's inking the former Oklahoma Sooner to a long-term deal or finding a replacement.
