Baker Mayfield Details Legendary Game Against Patrick Mahomes

Although his stats were a bit down the last season or two, Patrick Mahomes is still considered by many as the best quarterback in the NFL. While he has been considered the best over the last several years, Baker Mayfield has taken a different path.

After he was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, Mayfield had a frustrating first five seasons in the pros before he finally started to become his best self in 2023 and 2024 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

When Mahomes and Mayfield were in college, they competed in one of the better regular-season games in college football history on Oct. 22, 2016. On the newest episode of the "New Heights" podcast with Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, Mayfield recalled that shootout in Lubbock, Texas.

"My first time back to Lubbock as a player was crazy," Mayfield said. "... It was good. It was electric. It was intense.

"... I feel like it was Oklahoma versus Pat. We had to score a touchdown every single drive in the second half just to win the game. I'm like, 'What the hell is this?'"

In that game, Oklahoma and Mahomes' Texas Tech Red Raiders went back and forth in spectacular fashion. It was as much of a shootout as one will find in NCAA football, and both teams had a mind-numbing 854 total yards of offense apiece.

Mayfield completed 27 of 36 passing attempts and logged 545 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns. Mahomes threw a gargantuan 88 pass attempts and completed 52 of them for 734 yards and five touchdowns. He also added 85 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Texas Tech ended up outlasting the Sooners, 66-59. On the podcast, Jason Kelce called that final tally "a basketball score."

One has to wonder how Mahomes was able to get off 88 passing attempts in one game without needing an arm transplant. Then again, it was something of a prelude to the success he has had with the Kansas City Chiefs, which includes two league MVPs and three Super Bowl championships — so far.

Mayfield lit up the scoreboard in his own right last season with 4,500 passing yards on a 71.4% completion rate and 41 passing touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl for the second straight year and ranked fourth in passer rating, third in passing yards and second in passing touchdowns.
