Baker Mayfield indicated that he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't made any recent progress on a contract extension.
Mayfield is entering the final season of a three-year, $100 million deal he signed after reviving his career with the Buccaneers in 2023. Two weeks ago, the quarterback said he and the team are "not anywhere close" to a new contract, and he'd halt negotiations once training camp starts in late July.
Per ESPN's Jenna Laine, Mayfield told reporters on Tuesday that talks haven't escalated.
"Pretty much the same," Mayfield said. "But for me, like I told you guys, it's not going to affect how I approach this. Things will happen when they should, but for now I'm worried about getting better each day, finishing minicamp and this offseason program the right way, and going into training camp. Just handling it one day at a time."
The Buccaneers certainly must pay Mayfield more than the $4 million they gave him three years ago to keep the former No. 1 pick in Tampa Bay.
Mayfield has reached new heights with his fourth NFL organization, tallying the third-most passing yards (12,237) and second-most passing touchdowns (95) over the last three seasons. He steered the Buccaneers to consecutive NFC South titles in two Pro Bowl campaigns before enduring an underwhelming 2025.
Tampa Bay missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019 after losing seven of its final nine games. Mayfield settled for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and a 90.6 quarterback rating after throwing nine interceptions in the season's final eight contests.
That stretch could create uncertainty about the 31-year-old's long-term future as a franchise cornerstone worthy of a massive contract. Although he hasn't missed a game since joining a team, the organization is reportedly concerned that Mayfield must better protect himself to stay healthy.
Mayfield succinctly dismissed any worries about his durability after addressing his contract situation.
"I started every single game last year, for three years," Mayfield said. "I don't know if that should ever be a question."
