The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the season expecting their offense to be a major strength. Instead, Tampa Bay has struggled to produce consistent, efficient football as the season reaches a critical stretch.
The running game hasn’t been the primary concern, with the passing attack struggling to find its rhythm. Changing quarterbacks hasn’t solved those problems, leaving the Buccaneers searching for answers across the offense.
Baker Mayfield is back as Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback, bringing hope for a turnaround. Before his return, Mayfield discussed an uncomfortable team meeting focused on addressing the offense’s problems.
“We needed to have it. It’s one of those things that’s uncomfortable. You can’t be sensitive in that. Everybody [has] a hand in it. It was from, I mean, it wasn’t just about the last game. It was really more so talking about everything that we’ve done wrong,” Mayfield said.
“The O-Line is playing better and better now, that we need to be detailed in the right spots, quarterbacks have to go through the right reads, have the feet on time. So, just harping on the fact that we’re good when we do the right little things right, and so how consistent can we be and just see that thing come to life and go from there?”
Mayfield’s comments suggest the discussion addressed broader problems rather than one disappointing performance. The message centered on accountability, execution and eliminating the small mistakes that have repeatedly hurt the offense.
Uncomfortable conversations can be necessary when a team needs to correct its course. However, those discussions only matter if the Buccaneers translate them into better performances on the field.
Mayfield must protect himself and the football while delivering consistent decisions. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson needs to improve his play-calling and find ways to open up the passing game. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s skill players must become more impactful after inconsistent offensive production.
The offensive line’s improving play provides a foundation for progress. Now, every position group must execute consistently and work together to make the offense more effective.
Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers presents Tampa Bay with an important opportunity. A stronger offensive performance would provide momentum while helping the Buccaneers pursue their first divisional victory.
The Buccaneers still have time to change the narrative surrounding their season. But that turnaround requires more than promising conversations and renewed determination.
Mayfield’s return could provide the stability Tampa Bay needs at quarterback. If Robinson improves the offense’s approach and the players execute more consistently, the Buccaneers could finish stronger than they’ve started.
A convincing performance against Carolina would be a meaningful first step. With the division and playoff positioning at stake, Tampa Bay needs those uncomfortable conversations to produce tangible results.
