Baker Mayfield Wins Offensive MVP At The Pro Bowl
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The saying all year has been “Let Baker Bake.” So, the last time we got to see Baker Mayfield play this season, he did exactly just that. Baker Mayfield put the cherry on top of his great season with one last award, winning offensive MVP of the Pro Bowl.

The NFC defeated the AFC in a close and exciting game by a score of 64-59 at the Pro Bowl in Orlando, Florida. While Mayfield was the offensive MVP, it was DeMario Davis of the NFC South rival New Orleans’ Saints that won the defensive MVP.

Performance Of Baker Mayfield At The Pro Bowl

Before the game started, NFC coach Eli Manning said that Baker Mayfield was going to close the game out in the fourth quarter. Mayfield ended up coming in towards the end of the third quarter, scoring on two of his three drives in the game.

On the NFC’s first drive with him, Mayfield completed a couple of passes down the field before connecting on a touchdown pass to Cowboys’ wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. If you were having some Deja Vu, that’s because Mayfield and Lamb were teammates together at the University of Oklahoma where Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy.

Throughout the game Mayfield looked Lamb’s way to no surprise. On extra point, Mayfield found Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for the score, putting the NFC up over the AFC 55-53.

The second drive for the NFC and Baker Mayfield took much, much quicker. Specifically, it only took three plays. It started off with Mayfield completing a pass to Lions’ tight end Sam LaPorta for a big gain after a catch and run that set the NFC up at around the 4-yard line.

Next was a short completion to Rams wideout Puka Nacua at the 1 with a touchdown pass to Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs. For some reason Baker Mayfield was in tune with many of Detroit’s skill players. The 2-point conversion attempt to Seahawks’ receiver D.K. Metcalf was no good, but the NFC led 64-59.

Comical Finish

The last drive for Baker Mayfield resulted in a interception that wasn’t his fault, but comedy ensued along the way even before that. With a fourth and short a mid field and the NFC looking to close the game out, Mayfield ended up scrambling for a long gain, but was penalized for flag guarding at the end. Complaining to the referee, Mayfield yelled out “Flag guarding? Are you f’n kidding me?” showing off his trademark competitive nature.

A few plays later Mayfield was intercepted by Ravens’ safety Kyle Hamilton after the ball tipped off the hand Amon-Ra St.Brown, making it easy for Hamilton. Luckily, the NFC defense was able to get a stop at the end giving the NFC and Eli Manning the win over the AFC and Peyton Manning for the second year in a row. His first two drives was enough to give Baker Mayfield the MVP.

This has been a career year for Baker Mayfield as he saw personal highs in passing yards with 4,0444 and touchdowns with 28 on the season. He’s won multiple awards and accolades including PWFA’s Most Improved Player, an “NVP” given by Nickelodeon, a Pro Bowl alternate and now Pro Bowl MVP. He might be able to win one more award as he is nominated for comeback player of the year.

It’s been a great ride for Baker Mayfield, who is set to get a pay upgrade this offseason as he is a free agents. There were be many teams going after him and Bucs fans hope that he will return to Tampa Bay.
