Baltimore’s draft left the Ravens stronger at guard and shakier where Lamar Jackson needs calm

Baltimore can explain why it skipped center, and the explanation is reasonable. The problem is that reasonableness does not change the part of the offensive line where Lamar Jackson most needs clean operation.

The Ravens chose value over a reach

Eric DeCosta has laid out the logic clearly. Baltimore loved two centers, but once they were gone, the trade-up cost was too steep and the later options were not viewed as immediate difference-makers. He said the Ravens would keep exploring veteran cuts, trade options and other avenues, which is sensible roster management.

He also said the team would have had to give up a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick to move high enough for one of its preferred centers. That is the kind of price a disciplined front office resists.

The risk did not disappear, it just moved forward on the calendar

By the end of the draft, Baltimore had improved the guard picture but still had not replaced Tyler Linderbaum directly. DeCosta later called that outcome “unfortunate” while expressing confidence a solution will be in place by September.

That confidence may prove justified. Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn and Corey Bullock are real in-house competitors, and outside additions are still available. But center is different from a lot of other spots. It touches communication, timing and pocket cleanliness on every snap.

This matters because Baltimore’s offense is built on clarity

Lamar Jackson can erase many problems, but the Ravens are at their best when the structure around him is calm and fast. Guard upgrades help the line’s physical floor. They do not fully solve the exchange-and-identification issues that come with replacing a Pro Bowl center.

That makes this one of the most important unresolved questions left on Baltimore’s roster. The Ravens may still find the answer in May, June or August. Until they do, their draft has to be read in two parts: stronger on the interior’s brute force, shakier at the spot that keeps the whole operation organized.
