Baseball Legend Willie Mays Passes Away at 93
Robert Hanashiro / USA TODAY NETWORK

The baseball community is in mourning over the passing of Willie Mays, a legendary player who died on July 19th at the age of 93. As one of the best players to ever step on the diamond, Mays had a lasting impression on the game and went by the nickname “The Say Hey Kid.”

Willie Mays, who was born in Westfield, Alabama, on May 6, 1931, joined the New York Giants in 1951 for his Major League debut. He amassed 3,283 hits, slammed 660 home runs, and had a lifetime batting average of.302 throughout an amazing 22-season career. He won 12 Gold Glove Awards for his spectacular defensive abilities in center field, which were exemplified by his iconic over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series.

Mays ranks 6th overall in both home runs and runs scored in MLB history.

He was a 24-time All-Star and won two National League MVP titles in 1954 and 1965. His status as one of the greatest players of all time was cemented in 1979 when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Mays blazed new paths off it. He joined the ranks of African-American athletes who broke down racial boundaries in professional sports, and he played a significant role in baseball’s integration. In 2015, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his devotion to both the game and his community.

Willie Mays’ impact extended beyond his playing career. He was an active mentor to younger players and was frequently involved in charitable activities. His work with the Say Hey Foundation aimed to improve the lives of underprivileged youth through sports and education programs.

The world has lost a true sports hero, but Willie Mays’ legend will live on, continuing to inspire future generations to dream big.
