Caleb Williams missed his third consecutive game on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. The Chicago Bears star quarterback continues to recover from the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 2. However, offensive coordinator Press Taylor shared that he remains involved with the team.
Williams exited in the fourth quarter versus the Minnesota Vikings and did not return. Case Keenum started in his place the following week and led Chicago to a 27-7 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Tyson Bagent starred under center in the Week 4 matchup with the New York Jets, guiding the team to a 23-12 victory.
However, the 26-year-old struggled during Sundays rivalry showdown, finishing with 11-of-19 completions for 87 yards and two interceptions. He was benched in the fourth quarter for Keenum, who completed 11-of-19 passes for 108 yards and one interception. The Bears saw their two-game winning streak end via a 31-7 loss at Lambeau Field.
Taylor addressed reporters before the Week 5 game. He discussed how active Williams has been with the team despite his recovery.
“He’s performing his rehab the way he’s supposed to do with those guys, Taylor said. “So they’re up to speed on where he is physically and all that. But in terms of the walkthroughs and the meetings, he’s very involved, very engaged, exactly like he would be if he were the starter. You try to do everything possible to put yourself in the person’s shoes getting the rep without being the one physically out there. In terms of engagement and the way (quarterbacks coach) JT’s (Barrett) approached that, we’re very pleased with where he is in terms of staying involved in the plan.”
